Big Tech's AI Training: Your Data in the Spotlight
In recent months, tech giants LinkedIn and Meta have made headlines with their ambitious plans to leverage user-generated content for AI model training. This move has sparked both excitement and controversy, raising important questions about data privacy and user consent.
LinkedIn has begun training AI models using user data, a practice that has raised concerns due to its implementation without explicit user consent. The platform recently updated its privacy policies to disclose this data use, which includes information from user profiles, posts, and interactions on the site.
If you prefer to Opt-Out, LinkedIn has introduced an opt-out toggle in the account settings:
Go to Settings -> Select Data Privacy -> Look for "Data for Generative AI Improvement" -> Toggle the switch to opt out.
Meta has announced plans to resume training its AI models using public content from adult users on Facebook and Instagram in the UK.
In Meta’s words - “We will begin training for AI at Meta using public content shared by adults on Facebook and Instagram in the UK over the coming months. This means that our generative AI models will reflect British culture, history, and idiom, and that UK companies and institutions will be able to utilise the latest technology.”
If you prefer to Opt-Out, European users have a straightforward process:
Go to Settings - Navigate to About > Privacy Policy -> Look for a new box with information about Meta AI -> Click the "Right to object" link to access the opt-out form -> Select your country of residence -> Enter your email address -> Provide a reason for your objection
Unfortunately, Meta does not currently offer a direct opt-out feature for users outside of Europe.
